I have put together and birth mother letter outline for those of you who may be trying to figure out where to start. This outline is one of the resources I send all of my clients who are working on their birth mother letters, and it goes along with the tips I posted last week.

- Greeting- Hello or Dear Expectant Parents
- Opening Paragraph- thank you for taking the time to read this etc.
- Why We are adopting (be brief, if infertility is the cause mention it but not every drawn out detail) make sure adoption does not sound like a second choice.
- About us- Jobs and brief personality, it is great to write a few sentences about your spouse and what you look forward to seeing them do as a parent.
- A brief paragraph about our child(ren) if you are already a parent. Mention a few of their favorite things.
- What we enjoy doing, hobbies- you can mention pets here, but do not say they were “adopted”, use “rescued” or another term
- Religion, Volunteer work, other extra-curricular, keep it brief, you do not want to look like you are too busy for a child
- Extended Family and really close friends- this would be a place to talk about a male role model if you are single
- Our parenting values/goals- address Childcare and maternity leave if you will be working
- Closing- openness, expectant parents place in the child’s life
